My name is Clayton Farris and I’m the founder of King Lou Pets.
In November 2019, I lost my beloved Labradoodle Lou to a form of heart disease called Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM).
He was 9 years old.
I remember the day I adopted Lou. The first thing I looked up on our way home was the average life expectancy of his breed. It was about 12-15 years.
As you might know... one of our biggest fears as dog parents is losing our beloved dogs before expected...
So I made sure to do absolutely everything I could to help Lou live as long as possible. This included:

In October 2019, I noticed Lou became more tired, lost his appetite, and sometimes lost his breath.
I rushed out to the vet, and after several studies, Lou was diagnosed with DCM or Dilated Cardiomyopathy… also known as the “enlarged heart” disease.
I was anxious, and my world collapsed. What is this disease? Is it reversible? What do I do now? – I asked myself.
There was very little information about DCM in dogs available at the time.
The vets didn’t know the cause, and they didn’t know if it was reversible or not.
The only thing I could do was wait… and make Lou’s life as happy as I could during his last days.
Two months after the diagnosis, Lou sadly passed away.
I must say… Lou’s untimely death was one of the most heartbreaking experiences I’ve gone through so far…

Turns out there was a silent danger I was not aware of.
But it was not in vain.
Shortly after his passing, the FDA discovered a possible link between some well-known dog food brands and this often fatal heart condition.
One of the key suspects is the use of plant-based proteins as the main source of protein in dog food.
Plant-based proteins lack a key amino acid dogs need to thrive.
